Fresh from commentating at Le Tour, Phil Liggett is planning on riding the 150km Phil & Friends Challenge Ride on Sunday

Ride with Tour de France legend this weekend

Normally Phil Liggett rides the 100km route of his annual CTC Challenge ride. Asked whether he’s really going to attempt the extra loop he told BikeBiz: "I always start with good intentions."

His biggest problem is lack of fitness (and three weeks of French red wine) as his commentating duties for Versus and ITV mean he can’t ride his bike during the duration of the Tour.

The annual Challenge ride was created when Phil Liggett was president of the CTC. It takes place on the Peak District climbs which Liggett used when he was the organiser of the Milk Race: Holme Moss, Winnats Pass and Monsal Head.

There are two routes for riders, 100 and 150km Challenges, all leaving from and returning to Lomas Hall, Stannington, Sheffield, S6 6DB.

The Phil & Friends Ride raises funds for CTC’s campaigning work. To get a flavour of the day, watch this video of the 2007 event, when the ‘voice of cycling’ was joined by another: David Harmon, the Eurosport commentator.
