Last night, one of the first cycling decisions taken by Sadiq Khan, the new Mayor of London, looked to be the scrapping of the A40 Westway Cycling Superhighway. However, this has today been denied by the Mayor’s press office.
The possibilty of the canning for the route was first mentioned on Twitter by the extremely well-connected Peter Murray of New London Architecture, and the decision was confirmed to BikeBiz by a Transport for London executive at the Cycle City conference in Leicester.
TfL’s cycling officials were said to have been taken aback by the Mayor’s apparent move.
In another move that surprised observers Khan has also expressed support for the London Garden Bridge, a pet project of Boris Johnson and Joanna Lumley but which has many outstanding funding issues.
Before the Mayoral election Khan joined most of the other candidates in supporting London Cycling Campaign’s "sign for cycling" campaign.
Following publication of this story, and the claims from TfL officials, BikeBiz has been contacted by the Mayor’s press office, denying any decision has been made.
“Transport for London is still analysing the consultation responses on extending the East West Superhighway via the Westway and absolutely no decisions have been made,” said a statement from Sadiq’s office, adding that the new Mayor for London "wants to make London a byword for cycling around the world and is committed to making it a safer and easier choice for Londoners."
