The number of adults visiting a US bike shop and then purchasing a bicycle from the bike shop has fallen 20 per cent, according to the latest statistics from the Gluskin Townley Group.
The group is known for its research into the US cycle market, particularly its American Bicyclist Study Retail Landscape Report and Jay Townley will probably be best known for his appearances at iceBike*.
While there’s a charge to access the full report, there are some further details providing a snapshot of the US market – one which, famously, the UK cycle market mirrors more closely than the continental European market.
- The Retail Landscape Report relies on primary consumer research and found that from 2012 to 2014 the number of American consumers visiting a bike shop declined by 17 percent.
- The number of consumers who visited a bike shop, but purchased a bicycle from a discount/mass merchant increased by 117 percent.
- And adults who visited a bike shop and went on to purchase from an online retailer such as Amazon also declined by 36 percent.
