Nationwide event runs until Sunday June 24th; 1,500 events registered in the UK for Bike Week

Samsung Bike Week rides into action this week

Bike Week rode into action at the weekend, featuring a collection of local events under the Bike Week banner, all aimed at getting people on two wheels.

Officially started on Saturday, Bike Week runs until Sunday June 24th and is part of the Summer of Cycling, supported by British Cycling, LCC, ACT Travelwise, Sustrans, CTC and Cyclenation. Summer of Cycling has a simple concept – if you’re a cyclist you’re being encouraged to take a non-cyclist along with you for a ride this summer – a notion that fits in neatly with Bike Week.

1948 Olympic cyclist Tommy Godwin led last week’s Parliamentary Bike Ride to raise awareness of the cyclist-boosting initiative.

Samsung is the title sponsor of Bike Week and has released a smartphone app where cyclists can take part in a virtual Olympic torch relay and rise cash for charities in the process.

The official Bike Week site includes an event search function, as well as more info about how to take part.

Some retail outlets are taking advantage of Bike Week as chance to boost their profits – Toys R Us is running a ’20 per cent off’ sale on bicycling goods during Bike Week. Other canny companies taking advantage include Sherwood Hideaway, a holiday resort offering free bike hire during the week.

York Cycle Show, taking place at York Racecourse, will take place at the end of Bike Week.

Since posting this story, bike brand Claud Butler has informed us it is giving away a Claud Butler Hybrid Urban 300 bike to celebrate Bike Week. Punters have to retweet the competition with their Twitter account to be in with a chance to win.
