Sensors are to be fitted to Belfast’s bike share bikes in order to gather data to make cycling in the city safer for all cyclists. The sensors will be provided by Northern Ireland company See.Sense. Versions of the sensors are already used in the company’s "intelligent" bike lights.
200 Coca-Cola Zero Belfast Bikes will be so equipped in July. Data will be supplied to Queens University Belfast, University of West England and BT.
Anonymised information about journeys taken on the bikes will include road surface conditions, any collisions or near misses, as well as routes popular with users.
Belfast Bikes have been running since April 2015. The city has 40 docking stations. The bikes are supplied by Nextbike of Germany.
