Serco – operator of the Barclays Cycle Hire Scheme on behalf of TfL – has been awarded an expansion of its contract with the scheme.
Serco is to support the hire scheme’s expansion into East London, add new docking stations in West London and increase the number of stations in current areas.
The contract expansion has been valued at around £50m and will run until August 2015 – in line with the existing £140 million six-year contract awarded to Serco in August 2009. User revenues from Barclays Cycle Hire are paid direct to TfL, Serco said.
The expansion will see over 200 new docking stations, around 4,500 new docking points and approximately 2,300 new bikes. Serco will design, install and operate the extended scheme into Tower Hamlets. It will also build new docking stations in West London surround the Westfield Shopping Centre as well as various other new docking stations and additional capacity at busy sites.

Around 25,000 customers use the scheme every day, with over 140,000 registered users.
