Kimberley Walsh becomes ambassador for the Leeds edition of the event programme, which starts rolling in June

Skyride 2013 signs up Girls Aloud star

Skyride is enlisting celebrities and Olympic stars to generate publicity for its latest programme of events, running from June to September.

Skyrides are large scale traffic-free cycle rides and events in towns and cities are designed to offer something for everyone, including those new to cycling.

Kimberley Walsh, of Girls Aloud and Strictly Come Dancing fame, has been signed up as ambassador for Bradford Cycle Ride, riding out on July 7th. Walsh will officially start the ride and take in some of the route with the event taking on extra significance this year, beginning of a year of cycling celebrations in the city, as Leeds and Yorkshire get ready to host the Grand Depart of the 2014 Tour de France for the first time.

Across Yorkshire there’ll be traffic-free city rides in Bradford (August 11th), Hull (August 18th) and York (September 14th) and over 200 smaller Sky Ride Local rides with British Cycling trained ride leaders taking place across the county throughout the summer.

Walsh said: ‘I’m really delighted to be involved in this summer’s Sky Ride campaign and kicking off the first Sky Ride city event in Yorkshire on Sunday 7th July. It’s a fantastic initiative and cycling is a great way to stay in shape and keep healthy. The best part of this event is that it doesn’t matter if you haven’t been on a bike for a while, if you’re a novice or a more experienced rider, there is something for everyone."

Olympian Jason Kenny MBE will be at his home town Skyride in Bolton. It seems a fair bet that Boris Johnson will be at the London event too. There’s more on Skyride at www.goskyride.com.
