Smith Optics of Sun Valley, Utah, introduced an ultra-lightweight new helmet at PressCamp in Deer Valley. The Overtake weighs 250g. It features an "Aerocore" internal structure with Koroyd honeycomb-style polymer cores. These hexagonal "holes" are said to absorb 30 percent more energy than traditional EPS foam.
"Unlike traditional helmet designs, the use of Koroyd provides a significantly increased venting surface for better managed, highly focused airflow," says a statement from Smith Optics. "Its use also helps reduce the profile of the helmet, providing aerodynamic benefits."
The road helmet was unveiled to editors in Utah last week. The Aerocore technology was first used last year by Smith Optics in a mountain bike helmet.
Editors were told that the Overtake was second in wind tunnel tests and that Smith Optics execs were happy with this because the helmet was designed to be highly protective, extremely well ventilated, lighter and look good, too. It came second to the Specialized Evade. The testing was done in Len Brownlie’s FASTER wind tunnel in Vancouver.
The Overtake has 21 vents over the Koroyd polymer core insert. The helmet was designed to fit Smith Optics sports shades which attach in slots at the front and the rear when not in use. Very pro.
Some versions also feature MIPS (multi-directional impact protection system) anti-rotation liners. The Overtake retails for £250, or £310 for the MIPS version.
