Sustrans and Ucycle Nottingham join forces in safety drive

Students urged to brighten up their bikes

Bilborough College students are being encouraged to think about cycle safety this winter with a ‘Brighten Up Your Bike’ campaign run by Sustrans and Ucycle Nottingham.

This Thursday college students will benefit from free winter bike safety checks from Dr Bike, advice from Ridewise instructors plus music and a bike-powered smoothie maker.

Nottingham Pedals, the Big Wheel and the City Council will also be there to pedal the value of cycling as an everyday way to get around.

“We take a proactive approach to travel planning at the college, encouraging staff and students to avoid using cars to get here and providing bike storage and changing facilities for those who want to cycle," explained Chris Bradford, Principal at Bilborough College.

"It’s great that we’ll be helping to encourage cycling amongst our students and in our local community and to make cycling safer for everyone who chooses this healthy and clean means of getting around.”

Sustrans’ Ucycle project officer David Hobday added:
“With the darker nights and colder days, the winter months can put people off cycling to work, college or school so this event is about showing people that you don’t have to stop cycling. It’s great that Bilborough is getting some cycling fever and there is great advice and gear at the event to help cycling in the winter remain an easy, safe way to get around everyday."

The project is being delivered by Sustrans and funded by a number of organisations – including the soon-to-be abolished Cycling England. Nottingham City Council (including via EMDA), the city’s two universities and the Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust also helped fund the project.

The £3.32 million Ucycle project was conceived following a Nottingham Cycle Town proposal and began in September 2009, running until July 2011.
