Sustrans brings new local travel routes in Treforest

There are plans for a scheme to create new paths to improve travel on foot and bike around Treforest including links into the town centre with different educational establishments and facilities in the area. A study has been prepared to look at different options for the scheme, which includes various solutions to beat severance caused by the railway line and river that run through the town. Local people’s views and suggestions are welcomed on the plans in order for them to be finalised as soon as possible.

The exhibition will take place at the Treforest Community Centre, Kingsland Terrace, Treforest on Thursday April 29th starting from 12.30-6pm and Friday April 30th from 9am-8pm.

The scheme is funded by the Sustans, using part of the £50million award from the Big Lottery Fund that was won due to public vote in 2007, which was held to secure money for the plans. As well as the scheme exhibition, there will be a chance for people to nominate local heroes who they believe should be immortalised in steel as part of a Portrait Bench. The benches will appear on almost 80 routes across the UK and include three life size images of local heroes cut from steel, which are placed next to a bench on the route. Each route will have it’s own local heroes for the Portrait Bench to reflect the area’s history and culture. Heroes such as William Crawshay, Roland Fothergill, Evan and James James, Phil Campbell and Sir Tom Jones have been considered.

Rachel Lister, project manager for Sustrans Cymru, said: “We want to give Treforest and the surrounding area a great scheme that really works for the local people so that people can travel more on foot or by bike in easier, safer and more accessible ways. Many everyday journeys are under five miles and we hope people can be encouraged to leave their cars at home a little more and can enjoy travelling in this area.”
