The Playboy Xtreme Team is for real. Genuine centrefolds (theres even a waiting list!) compete in genuine adventure races. And do very well. Indeed, last year the team was ranked second female team in the US for off-road triathlons.
Now Castelli have pulled out all the stops to create a set of cycle clobber for the cut-down Playboy Xtreme team taking part in the Malaysian Eco-Challenge. There are 18 members of the full team but only four are flying to Malaysia (and one of them is a bloke!)
Special size patterns were made and clothing was produced in a one-week period.
Shipments were made to team founder and leader Danelle Folta (a Playboy Playmate in 1995), who commented that the team did not think it was possible to have technical cycling clothing that was also beautiful and sexy.
"We are pumped with the clothes we received, the fabrics are great, the fit is awesome and the look is unbelievable," she said.
Michael Herbert, Castellis US MD, said: "We pulled the outerwear, base layers and jerseys as well as team member Owen Wests clothing from stock, and made special cuts for the womens shorts.
"After reviewing some samples with Danelle on the phone, the team asked for shorter in-seams on their shorts, we made them and used our new 01 Progetto Y2 Donna pad."
This uses ComforTemp foam as the middle layer. ComforTemp is a high-tech material that has temperature regulating properties guaranteeing that the pad maintains a constant 98.6 degree temperature no matter the body or ambient temperature.
This no doubt prevents the racer from steaming up…but not the spectators, eyeballs and tongues hanging out.
