Astonishing clip by disgruntled bike theft victim shows public apathy to cycle theft in progress

VIDEO: “Nobody cares if a bike is stolen in New York”

A short self-filmed documentary by a mutliple-time victim of bike theft in New York has demonstrated shocking public apathy to the crime in progress.

At one point during the video, the acting thief plugs an angle grinder into a street lamp, straps on safety gear and goes to work on the chain on a busy street.

Perhaps most shocking of all, toward the end of the clip, police roll right by while our ‘thief’ is taking a hammer and spike to the lock. The van then appears to tell the cameraman off for filming the incident…

A moped rider does eventually stop to show concern… for the thief’s lack of luck with the hammer, that is. Stepping off, the man offers a set of vice grips to assist cutting the chain.
