80% rise in visitor numbers; Pinarello sales jump

Wiggle records biggest summer sales week in 12 years

Online cycle and tri retailer Wiggle has reported its biggest-ever week of summer sales in its 12 year history, jumping a whopping 60 per cent year-on-year.

In common with a number of other cycle firms, Wiggle said the medal winning success of Bradley Wiggins, Sir Chris Hoy, Laura Trott, Jason Kenny and Team GB in cycling events at London 2012 were drivers of the rise.

Along with the climb in sales, the Portsmouth-based global retailer saw an 80 per cent rise in GB consumers coming to its site, with over two million visits to its website in the final week of London 2012.

Wiggle sold out of official Team GB cycling performance wear. Pinarello bikes – as used by Wiggins to win the Tour de France – saw sales jump 400 per cent (compared with the amount Wiggle sold last year).

In the last month Wiggle sold enough inner tubes to wrap around the outside of London’s Olympic Stadium 157 times – and sold thousands more water bottles and puncture repair kits than any normal summer.

“GB successes at the Tour de France and London 2012, have driven Wiggle’s best-ever week in our 12 year history," said marketing director Martin Talbot. "Thousands of consumers have shopped with us for the first time, but we’ve also seen many Wiggle regulars – existing cycling enthusiasts, who are significantly upgrading their kit. We hope this golden summer for cycle retailers is the beginning of a new era of cycling on home soil and beyond.”
